There’s thousands of expressions our faces make each day. As a photographer, I think that being able to find that perfect millisecond of a reaction in a subject’s face is the most important aspect to portraiture.
Even without relying on facial expressions, people reveal a lot by how they hold their body; clothing, gesture, posture, attitude, how they hold space – this all offers more layers of expression beyond what a subject’s face may be showing.
I look to capture the most natural, relaxed and “real” facial & body expressions a subject makes so that viewers can “believe” the image and not see a forced pose or fake smile.
I BELIEVE THAT PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY IS MORE THAN JUST GETTING A SNAPSHOT OF SOMEONE’S FACE.
It’s about capturing the essence of a person’s identity and attitude through gesture.
Micro-expressions can be difficult to recognize to the naked eye, but images and video can make them easier to see and also perceive. When I choose to use a photograph, I’m looking for something authentic and natural in that subject.
